Women’s Day Beer Tasting 2025

We had a full house on Saturday for our beer tasting for International Women’s Day. We tasted four beers made by amazing women in the beer industry and enjoyed an exciting pub quiz about women & beer.

Esko blond (6.5%) brewed for 'Bier tegen de stroom in' in Sint-Amands (Belgium) at Belgian Contract Breweries. The name of the beer is inspired by the Schelde river (Escaut in french).
The beer has a fruity aroma, the taste is malty and slightly fruity with a pleasant hoppy bitterness. Easy drinking and quite refreshing!

Pepernoten stout (8%) brewed by Two Chefs Brewing in Amsterdam (the Netherlands). Saint- Nicolaas is in the country and that means it's time for #pepernoten (the tiny gingerbread-like cookies in the photo 😊)!
This strong stout beer was brewed with #speculaas spices. The result is a lovely dark ale full of roasted grains, chocolate and caramel flavours, a hint of sweetness from the alcohol volume and strong, tasty notes from spices like cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg.
Perfect for the upcoming cold and dark evenings.

Othmar lady tripel (7.5%) brewed by Othmar Bierbrouwerij in Ootmarsum (the Netherlands).
This tripel was thought up by the ladies in the brewery. The result is a full bodied, malty sweet beer with nice yeasty notes. Cheers!

Saison- Lambic- Cassis (6.5%) brewed by Brasserie Taymans in Brussels in collab with Brasserie La Fluviation.

This beer is a blend of a #saison from La Fluviation and a #lambic from Taymans fermented with whole black currants.
The result is a beer with a beautiful red colour, a fruity aroma and a mild wild yeast (#brett) taste together with a black currant and grainy base.
It was a little flat but the taste was delicious!

GooischeTripel (8.5%) brewed by Gooische Bierbrouwerij in Hilversum (the Netherlands).
This tasty tripel was brewed with barley malts and locally grown triticale, a hybrid of wheat and rye. It makes for a well balanced malty base with a lot of flavour and some hints of spices.

Saison Dupont Dry Hop (6.5%) brewed by Brasserie Dupont in Tourpes (Belgium).
This variation on the classic Saison Dupont was infused with a Styrian hop before being put in a can. The hops give the beer notes of grapefruit on top of the spicy, grainy base. Easy drinking, refreshing and a great addition to the Dupont beer gamma. Yum!

Last week I tried three beers from the Dutch Aldi craft beer range in cans , brewed by #Schultenbrau.

1. Neipa (4.9%) - a decent hazy New England IPA, full of juicy, fruity #Hoppiness with hints of peach and lime. Easy drinking and tasty.

2. Juicy blond (6%) - a Belgian style blond with a nice and sweet malty body and fruity aromas and flavours from the yeast. Yum.

3. IPA (6%) - a lot of hops in this IPA giving it both tropical and citrus notes on top of a full, malty body.

Overall, these three beers did not disappoint and the price of these cans (around one euro) make it a pretty good deal. Will come back to try the other beers in this range.

Golden Delicious apple brut beer (7%) brewed by Hof Ten Dormaal in Tildonk (Belgium).
I recently discovered that Belgium's only farm brewery that works from grain to glass also has a beautiful "champagne style" beer. For this beer the brewer sourced some local apples from a neighbouring farm and juiced them in with the brew. The result is definitely good! The beer has a well balanced acidity and dryness on top of a grainy base with a lovely sparkle. Perfect for an apero or as I did here with a piece of delicious Dutch apple pie. Yum!
