Women’s Day Beer Tasting 2025

We had a full house on Saturday for our beer tasting for International Women’s Day. We tasted four beers made by amazing women in the beer industry and enjoyed an exciting pub quiz about women & beer.

Westmalle Extra (4.8%) brewed at Westmalle Abbey in Westmalle (Belgium).
This #trappistale is one of the abbey's oldest beers. In 1836 the monks of Westmalle started brewing light and refreshing beers for their own consumption and the Extra is a beer from this tradition.
It is indeed not too strong but it's rich in body and flavour. The Abbey yeast takes a prominent role, giving it a fruity, musty aroma and a full body, malty yet also with a long lasting bitterness. It may not be the most original #trappistbeer but it's a tasty thirst quencher and that is perfect for a hot day like today.

Stuut juicy dolly neipa (5.8%) brewed by Brasserie Caulier in Peruwelz (Belgium).
Since 2017 Brasserie Caulier is exploring different beer styles under the #Stuut brand-name. This juicy dolly is beer nr. 25. It's brewed from barley, wheat and oat malts, lactose and double dry hopped with motueka and citra hops. It's a beautiful hazy neipa with a tropical aroma. The taste is crisp and fresh with strong notes of citrus fruits and a good bitter finish.

Zwaanzinnig wit (4.5%) brewed by Bird Brewery from Diemen (the Netherlands) brewed in the tanks of Jopen Beer in Haarlem.
A wheat beer brewed from wheat, barley, oats, orange peel and aromatic hops. The result is a refreshing beer, nice and grainy, with a tropical hoppiness and a hint of orange. The name is a combination of zwaan (swan) and waanzinnig (crazy /outrageously good). All beers have names with birds in them. The brewery tries to do a lot of projects around sustainability and nature and has, for instance, planted many trees already.

A tropical and refreshing pale ale, with a good bitterness, a hint of citrus and a bit of malty sweetness. Kura kura means turtle in Bahasa Indonesia and the brewery found the inspiration for their name in the folklore tale that the island of Bali was resting on the back of a turtle.

Bintang Crystal lager (4.3%) brewed by Bintang (Heineken) breweries in Indonesia.
A cold brewed lager, marketed as a premium beer, reminding me of Corona in the same type of glass bottle.
It has a little less alcohol than the normal Bintang lager, is a bit smoother, maltier and less bitter. Easy drinking and a good thirst quencher in the tropical Indonesian weather.

Nothing better for tropical weather than a flavourful, not too strong IPA. This beer has a nice tropical aroma of peach and mango, a good hoppy bitterness and a slightly juicy flavour. And of course, light and refreshing as well. Yum!
