Last week I visited the open brewery days at #Westmalle #Trappist. It was a well organised event with a parcours throughout the whole place. Lots of info on the history, but also on the brewing method and the ingredients. For instance:
Did you know their beers are brewed with the whole hopflower and not with pellets?
The #artdeco copper brewing system from the twenties was amazing to see, as well as the huge new brewing room.
I also spotted some barrels of fresh yeast, ready to be picked up by the trappist brothers of #westvleteren. Did you know they pick up fresh yeast at Westmalle before every brew?

It was great to look around and see how it all works for them. At the end there was an enjoyable tasting with their homemade cheeses. Yum!

Straffe Hendrik Heritage 2023 quadruple (11%) brewed by Brouwerij De Halve Maan in Brugge (Belgium).
This #quadrupel was #barrelaged for more than one year on oak barrels. This strong dark ale has a beautiful complex taste that keeps on giving as it warms up the glass. Rich malt aromas, chocolate, liquorice and caramelised sugars,  alcohol sweetness, a hint of dark fruits and a nice complexity thanks to the oak and the tannins. 
A beautiful beer already, but I'm also curious to see what it will taste like after some years in my cellar. Let's hope I manage to not open the other bottle 😉 Yum!

Wow! What a weekend it was at Hoppiness Brussels!🤩
This weekend were the Heritage Days and especially for this year's theme we hosted eight workshops about the influence of the interwar years and Art Deco on Belgian Beer Culture. What a pleasure it was to dive into our history and taste three beer styles from those years with so many visitors. We tasted:
- fresh #lambic from @brasseriecantillonofficiel 
- Silly #Scotch brewed for the first time in 1918 from @brasseriedesilly 
- Palm Speciale brewed first in 1929 by @palmcraftbreweries

La Divine (9.5%) brewed by Brasserie Silly in Silly (Belgium)
This brewery celebrates their 175th anniversary tomorrow so it's definitely fitting to drink one of their many tasty beers.

La Divine is a strong amber ale in the triple style. It has a lot of grainy, malty flavours, quite a bit of strong alcohol sweetness but also some hints of wood and some bitterness from roasted grains and from hops. Perfect after my very busy working day.

Placebo (0.0%) from Brasserie Lupulus in Bovigny (Belgium)
Tasted at the Belgian Beer Weekend. This blonde #Alcoholfree beer is brewed with Mosaic and Citra hops, and lightly dry-hopped with Cryo Sabro. The result is refreshing and chockful of hoppy flavours. Definitely a good beer without alcohol!

Kombine unfiltered helles (6%) brewed by Brouwerij St. Bernardus (Belgium( in collaboration with Weihenstephan (Germany).
This is the first time St. Bernardus has brewed a bottom-fermented beer and also the first time for them for a beer that is not re-fermented in the bottle. This collab beer was made with yeast from Weihenstephan and a hop blend from both breweries.
The result is a good and refreshing beer, malty but also with a yeasty and herbal hoppy taste.

Schwarzbier black lager (5%) brewed by Brasserie de la Mule in Schaarbeek, Brussels.
A tasty beer from this local brewery with a beautiful dark color and a creamy head. The taste is full of roasted malts with hints of coffee, chocolate and caramel. Low abv but rich in flavour, with a soft and smooth mouthfeel and a nice bitter finish.

Flemish Red Ale (5.2%) brewed by SOSAB (science of sour ale brewing) in Heule (Belgium). This beer was #barrelaged for 12 months on oak foederals and has a nice wooden touch due to that. It has a nice balance of sour (apple, vinegar, berries) and sweet. At Belgian Beer Weekend I also tasted this beer from the tap at the stand of The Brew Society but that was a very different beer, the sweetness was much more present.

Straffe Hendrik Heritage 2023 quadruple (11%) brewed by Brouwerij De Halve Maan in Brugge (Belgium).
This #quadrupel was #barrelaged for more than one year on oak barrels. This strong dark ale has a beautiful complex taste that keeps on giving as it warms up the glass. Rich malt aromas, chocolate, liquorice and caramelised sugars,  alcohol sweetness, a hint of dark fruits and a nice complexity thanks to the oak and the tannins. 
A beautiful beer already, but I'm also curious to see what it will taste like after some years in my cellar. Let's hope I manage to not open the other bottle 😉 Yum!

Wow! What a weekend it was at Hoppiness Brussels!🤩
This weekend were the Heritage Days and especially for this year's theme we hosted eight workshops about the influence of the interwar years and Art Deco on Belgian Beer Culture. What a pleasure it was to dive into our history and taste three beer styles from those years with so many visitors. We tasted:
- fresh #lambic from @brasseriecantillonofficiel 
- Silly #Scotch brewed for the first time in 1918 from @brasseriedesilly 
- Palm Speciale brewed first in 1929 by @palmcraftbreweries 

A big thank you to @urban_brussels for organising this beautiful weekend and to all those lovely people that joined!

La Divine (9.5%) brewed by Brasserie Silly in Silly (Belgium)
This brewery celebrates their 175th anniversary tomorrow so it's definitely fitting to drink one of their many tasty beers.

La Divine is a strong amber ale in the triple style. It has a lot of grainy, malty flavours, quite a bit of strong alcohol sweetness but also some hints of wood and some bitterness from roasted grains and from hops. Perfect after my very busy working day.

Tasted at the Belgian Beer Weekend. This blonde #Alcoholfree beer is brewed with Mosaic and Citra hops, and lightly dry-hopped with Cryo Sabro. The result is refreshing and chockful of hoppy flavours. Definitely a good beer without alcohol!

Kombine unfiltered helles (6%) brewed by Brouwerij St. Bernardus (Belgium( in collaboration with Weihenstephan (Germany).
This is the first time St. Bernardus has brewed a bottom-fermented beer and also the first time for them for a beer that is not re-fermented in the bottle. This collab beer was made with yeast from Weihenstephan and a hop blend from both breweries.
The result is a good and refreshing beer, malty but also with a yeasty and herbal hoppy taste.

Schwarzbier black lager (5%) brewed by Brasserie de la Mule in Schaarbeek, Brussels.
A tasty beer from this local brewery with a beautiful dark color and a creamy head. The taste is full of roasted malts with hints of coffee, chocolate and caramel. Low abv but rich in flavour, with a soft and smooth mouthfeel and a nice bitter finish.

Flemish Red Ale (5.2%) brewed by SOSAB (science of sour ale brewing) in Heule (Belgium). This beer was #barrelaged for 12 months on oak foederals and has a nice wooden touch due to that. It has a nice balance of sour (apple, vinegar, berries) and sweet. At Belgian Beer Weekend I also tasted this beer from the tap at the stand of The Brew Society but that was a very different beer, the sweetness was much more present.

These Oude Geuze series are a tribute to the founder of Oud Beersel, Henri Vandervelden, who started the brewery in 1882. The 140 was made especially for the 140th anniversary of Oud Beersel. It's a blend of #lambics with an average of 30 months.

Exciting news! Hoppiness Brussels &  @hoppyz.zythologie will participate in the Heritage Days this year.

Under the theme ART DECO – Roaring Twenties, Crash Years, the event will highlight a wide spectrum of heritage: from buildings, façades, and interiors to furniture, collections, intangible heritage, and public spaces.

Hoppiness Brussels and Hoppyz have together worked out a workshop and presentation that will be hosted in both our tasting rooms. Hoppiness in Jette (NL / ENG) and Hoppyz in Forest (FR/ENG).

The subject will be: 'How the Interwar Period Shaped Belgian Beer Culture'

The events of the period between the two world wars had a big influence on daily life and on the Belgian Beer culture. From the roaring twenties to the popular World Exhibitions, from the American prohibition to the Great Depression: breweries were impacted immensely and had to adjust.
Local beer experts Helene and Carien will be your hosts during these special workshops at their tasting rooms and take the participants through the changes of this time and the impact on Belgian beer culture. You will learn about a few beer styles that were popular then and see what happened to those styles and to the Belgian breweries of those times.
