Special beer tasting

We hosted a special beer tasting station at a very beautiful location recently: the residency of an ambassador in Brussels.

Wednesday I had the pleasure and privilege to visit Mouterij Dingemans in Stabroek (Antwerpen). We got an extended tour and saw every corner of this malting factory that celebrates their 150th anniversary this year.
In the photos you can see the factory, the grain silos outside, the newer buildings and the malting process, from the steeping of the grains, the germination, the drying and roasting but also the laboratory where they extensively test all the incoming grains to see what the success rate of the malting will be. We ended the tour with a tasting of the delicious beers that were specially brewed for the anniversary. What a beautiful day!

Quintine de Noël (7.8%) brewed by Brasserie de Legendes in Ath (Belgium).
The flavour in this dark #christmasbeer mainly comes from the malts, it has hints of dark, bitter chocolate and roasted grains. It has a nice dry and bitter finish.

Paljas winter whisky infused (7.5%) brewed by Brouwerij De Leite in Oostkamp (Belgium).
This dark #winterbeer has some Filliers whisky added before bottling. The result is a tasty beer with a nice grainy maltiness, a hint of whisky that brings some warmth from the alcohol, but doesn't make the beer too strong,

I started a new quest ☺️ I will visit all the independent beer shops in #Brussels and put them in the spotlight.
Next stop: Beer Mania in Ixelles
I had the pleasure to interview Michael who told me all about his beautiful shop and how long he has been doing this (since 1981!). I also got to taste his own beer Mea Culpa at the cozy bar in the back of the shop. Definitely a tasty thirst quencher!

This beer style has been around for more than a hundred years, yet it remains an unknown Belgian classic.
It's a tasty sweet brown ale, with rich malty flavours like caramel, chocolate and red fruit, a nice dry finish and some lovely warmth from the alcohol. Perfect for dark winter days.

* There is a new #gueze in town! *

Today was the launch, and comeback after more than 50 years, of Gueze Lambic Taymans. Six brothers, all grandsons of the former brewer, have been working hard in the last few years to revive the brewery in Jette (#Brussels). Their first gueze was ready today and they celebrated with a nice launching party.
The gueze is definitely worth trying, it has a good sparkle, a mild acidity with a hint of green apples and notes of wood due to the use of new barrels. Can't wait to taste it again after some more aging. (In my cellar already 😎)

Rio Triple Ambree (8%) brewed by Brasserie Valduc-Thor in Thorembais-Saint-Trond (Belgium).
When opening the bottle I was immediately greeted by a pleasant aroma of fresh orange and other citrusfruit.This amber tripel has a well balanced caramel maltiness together with notes of fruity hops. Made with four different malts, four different hops and no spices. A very enjoyable beer!

Abyss cacao stout (8%) brewed by Fugu Brewing in #Brussels.
This beer was made with barley, wheat, oats and cacao husk from Fugu's neighbours Mike & Becky.
The result is a rich, dark beer full of flavour; roasted grains, a hint of coffee, a lot of dark, bitter chocolate and a little alcohol sweetness.

Iwein van Aelst - amber beer (6.2%)

Yesterday I was in Aalst in theatre De Werf, where they have a good selection of local beers in their bar. I came across this beer, a project of four locals with the name Iwein, in honor of Iwein Van Aelst. They made the recipe for this beer together and were inspired by their favorite beers: #Orval and #gueze.
This surprising amber beer is definitely somewhere in the middle of these two: malty, fruity and semi-sweet, a mild acidity and a funky aroma. Yum!
