Special beer tasting

We hosted a special beer tasting station at a very beautiful location recently: the residency of an ambassador in Brussels.

About Hoppiness Brussels

Hoppiness is all about good craft beer and having a good time. Hoppiness stands for hoppy happiness. And the triple pun is intended as there are two happy rabbits hopping around in our garden. If you are lucky, they may even wander into the Hoppiness Tasting Room as they consider the whole house to be theirs.

The future is Europe Neipa (7%) by Brussels Beer Project in #Brussels
A collab of 13 European breweries , all attending Wanderlust in September and only brewed with European ingrediënts.
It's a juicy IPA full of tropical fruits like mango, pineapple and coconut with quite a strong bitterness.

Schuppenboer winter rum barrel aged blond (10%) brewed by Brouwerij Het Nest in Turnhout (Belgium)

A strong ale for sure this beer, I would be surprised if the barrel aging on Belize rum barrels has resulted in an even higher percentage than 10.
The beer has a strong rum and alcohol taste, but also notes of wood and spices, combined with quite a bitter mouthfeel.
Definitely a good beer but for me the barrel aging could have been shorter so the rum influence would be a little less.

An Abbey beer brewed for a small abbey Boudelo in Klein- Sinaai.
An amber blonde beer full of malty and spiced notes, with hints of fruits, almonds and a little hop bitterness in the finish. Very enjoyable!

Grimbergen Winter (6.5%) by Brouwerij Alken-Maes in Belgium.
A red brown winter ale with a nice malty sweetness (not too much) with notes of red fruit and quite a bit of spices, like cinnamon and liquorice. Ideal for the ice cold December days we are having now in Brussels.

Jump out of a plane milkshake IPA (6%) by Brouwerij The Musketeers in Sint- Gillis- Waas (Belgium).
This milkshake IPA from the bucket list series of this brewery is brewed with lactose to get a smooth and creamy mouth feel. The aroma is full of tropical fruit, the taste is fruity as well on top of a strong hop bitterness with a sweet and sour finish. Tasty but also a bit heavy on my stomach.

Sisu Sahti (8%) Finnish farmhouse ale brewed by Schoolhouse Brewing in Marietta, Georgia (USA).
An American brewery making an historic Finnish sahti beer. The result is a strong ale full of grainy and caramelized malt flavours with a strong spiciness, juniper and ginger, that is a bit too powerful for me. Very interesting style to try though!

Galaxy Neipa (5.5%) brewed by Brussels Beer Project (BBP) in Brussels.
An ipa brewed with galaxy hop and two experimental hop varieties that resulted in a tasty beer filled with a delicious hoppiness, quite tropical and with a nice bitterness. An enjoyable thirst quencher!

A fantastic get together this week at the yeast factory Algist Bruggeman in Ghent. Fermentis hosted their sharingdays on a beautiful conference boat that cruised to the canal in front of the factory. From there we made a very interesting visit to see how they make their yeast. No photos allowed except for me being dressed up nicely 😉
On the boat we enjoyed great food and quite a few fermented drinks, and learned from many interesting workshops.A big thank you to Fermentis by LeSaffre.

Symbiose 2023 cider-mede-lambiek (8.3%) by blender Boerenerf in Huizingen (Belgium).
A blend of cider, mead and lambic blended and fermented at the Boerenerf farm. The result is very tasty, it's smooth and mellow, with mild notes of apple and honey and a little sour freshness.

Today a lot of Flemish breweries organised brewery tours for a good cause. #warmsteweek
We visited the brewery of The Musketeers. It was a lovely and very interesting visit, it was really nice to hear the story of this brewery, which goes back 25 years already. After the tour I tasted some of their many different beers and enjoyed dinner in the cozy restaurant. Recommended for a visit!

A refreshing lambic beer with a mild acidity and a long lasting, rich aftertaste. Beer of spontaneous fermentation and aged on wooden barrels. Served from a bag in a box (3.1liter) so you can have fresh lambic beer at home for at least a month. If you manage to keep it that long of course 😉
